what do you think should be happening here to try and get a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff happening? >> i have no doubt people are working very hard to get a deal. i wish their discussions -- well, now we have the president re-elected and we have a new congress. i think it's right they get them to the business of sorting this out. i think america's got to think that what it needs to do is get growth in its economy as well. and it needs to get growth by trade and exporting. i think what we're missing at the moment is a global agreement whereby big powers try to rebuild confidence in the world. yes, have you to sort out the fiscal problems. yes, you also have to have growth because that's the key to employment and to prosperity to the future. there's a global deal waiting to be done with china, europe, india also involved in this and, of course, america itself, where we could build the confidence that is necessary to get higher levels of growth around the world. >> and finally, gordon brown, i couldn't let you go without asking the view of the single biggest news story to hit the plane

investors going into a short holiday week worried about a fiscal cliff deal. all markets pointing to a lower open. markets close at 1:00 p.m. eastern today. >>> gas prices have dropped by nearly 12 cents over the last two weeks. the average cost of a gallon of regular is $3.26, according to the latest lundberg survey. in the last 11 weeks, gas prices have fallen by 58 cents per gallon. lower prices at the pump are not likely to continue. we can see an increase of 5 or 10 cents per gallon soon, due to increasing crude oil prices. >>> a potential big snag for transport and trade. 16,000 workers at 15 ports from boston to houston on the verge of going on strike. the international long shoreman's observation association has been bargaining since march and a contract extension expires on the 29th. you've heard about the fiscal cliff. what about the dairy cliff? that's what dairy farmers and milk producers are called dairy subsidies set to expire. unless congress extends legislation, you could see milk prices double next year to about $7 a gallon. 7 bucks a gallon.

charles, bring it round to the fiscal cliff because it's all interwoven here. it's all about basically where should government be spending money, where should cuts be made, and who ends up paying the lion's share of this. my sense is this will not go over the cliff and the reason it won't is that public opinion is now raging so hard against the republicans in all the polls that you see, they've lost the argument so why go over a cliff and make it worse for yourselves. >> i think you're right about that, because all of the polls i've seen say exactly what you're saying which is that the republicans will be blamed if we go over the cliff. but the first part of your question i think is the more crucial part of the question, which is how do you not cut off your nose to spite your face. if you do things, you make cuts that harm children who need to learn, who need to be able to go to school on a full stomach and be able to stay a whole day and have programs that will allow them to be competitive with children in china and india, if you need that to be a real situati

one is the fiscal cliff. charles, do you get the same feeling that i have, that there is a more collective will to try to avoid falling off this cliff, and to get a deal done perhaps sooner rather than later? >> i absolutely do believe that. i believe that obama has a stronger hand. because if nothing happens, you know, no one wants that to happen. and in fact, the clock is ticking in that direction at this point. so everybody has kind of an incentive to say, let's cut some sort of deal. and i do believe that that deal will eventually encompass both the revenue increases and some sort of structural realignment of some of the entitlement programs. and i think that, i actually believe that the american people put aside what the right and the left want. the american people are actually desperate to see their government be able to work. to do something, to make it happen. to not go into another situation where we have another downgrade. that is exactly the opposite of what we want coming out of this presidential

. >> let's turn to the fiscal cliff. we saw the president earlier today saying he's going to call for top leaders to the white house. he clearly wants to try and ease momentum from his election to get a deal thrashed out. is there the will amongst senior republicans to do business, do you think? >> there has to be some sort of agreement worked out, but i don't think republicans, particularly house republicans, should be in a position that they're just going to do whatever the president wants. i think john boehner was very clear that everything is on the table with respect to revenue reductions -- revenue increases as well as spending reductions, but there are certain things that aren't. and i think what john boehner said is right, we should not be increasing tax rates on businesses in america. so i think you're going to look at it from the standpoint of can we tighten the tax code, limit deductions? there are things we can do to simplify the code that will result in more revenue because it will result in more growth. i t

let's turn to the fiscal cliff. your book "the price of politics" deals with this in some detail. there's a general sense that there is a greater desire on both sides to try and do a deal now. post the election, obama got a second term, to simply drag it out as before would be self-defeating. do you agree with that? >> well, the mood is better, but there's some real serious disagreements on taxes and entitlement reform. i think of the things going on, it is one of the most worrisome because it has an absolute deadline. the first of the year, they have to decide what they're going to do. if they don't change the law, it's not a matter of policy, but the law on taxes and spending cuts, the congressional budget office which is the neutral arbiter on this, has said we will have the government created recession and that could be a disaster for everyone, could be a political disaster for obama and the republicans. >> there are few people who can talk with such clarity about so many different world affairs. thank you for joining me. i appreciate it. >>> coming up, is egypt the region's l

so with 29 days to go until the fiscal cliff, what would it take to get a deal? joining me now, men on opposite sides, grover norquist, president of americans for tax reform and robert reish, former secretary of labor for president bill clinton and the author of "beyond outrage." none of the three of us are beyond outrage, grover norquist, which is why i keep having you back. the situation it seems to me as an impartial observer here is that both sides have now made fairly ludicrous offers that they know the other side is never going to accept in a million years. that does beg the question, grover, why bother, given that both sides know where they need to move, why the games? >> well, it's not clear that both sides know. the week after the election, president obama was asked do you have to have the higher rates or could we have deductions and credits and he said he was open to negotiations. three weeks later, after thanksgiving, he shows up and all of a sudden there's a line in the sand on rates that had come out of nowhere, so the president seems to be moving th
